Can I get an Electrician to sign off mine or someone else's work

certify electrical works in bristol

Can I get an Electrician to sign off mine or someone else's work ?

You may run into problems if you hire a builder, handyman , a friend or an unregistered electrician to carry out electrical work.No Electrician in Bristol will 'sign off' someone else's work.

Electrical work in your home must comply to building regulations , known as Part P. These regulations are in place to ensure that work carried out is to a safe standard.

"We get many calls from members of the public who wants a company to sign off work that has been completed by an unregistered electrician or handyman"

It is illegal for an electrician to sign off work that has not been designed and installed by themselves or has not supervised the work undertaken

It is possible to have the works inspected by an electrician , this is known as an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report), which is not the same as an installation certificate. The only way to get an Installation certificate is to have the work completely redone by a registered electrician.

Not having the correct certificates will become a problem when selling the property,in some cases this could prevent the sale from processing, and may void any insurances.

"Just because it works, it doesn't mean its safe"

To stay on the right side of the law and get the correct certification is to use a registered electrician. All registered electricians are able to self-certify their electrical work by carrying out all necessary testing at all stages of the design, installation and inspection.

Electricians are registered with a certifying governing organisation , which they will likely advertise their membership of that relevant body such as:

  • Napit
  • NICEIC
  • Elecsa

The above bodies are no different from each other when it comes to standards and electrical safety. Each registered electrician has routine inspections carried out on them to ensure safety standards and knowledge is maintained.

Electrician's will not sign off others work, if you have had work carried out and not had it certificated then you need to contact that electrician or the organisation they claim to be a member of, If its found that they are not registered and cant find them again you can contact the local building authority and they may guide you on what you need to do.

Always look into who you are hiring and always obtain a few quotes from different electrical companies

Summary

  • No Decent electrician will 'sign off' electrical work carried out by others
  • You may be potentially fined for carrying out notifiable work
  • Local authorities have the power to make home owners or landlords remove any work that does not meet the building regulations part P
  • Insurances may be void
  • Can end up costing you more to get the work redone
  • By law a landlord or home owner must prove that all electrical work meets part P of the building regulations , if not you will be committing a criminal offence
  • Always hire a registered electrician

So,If you're still in doubt, contact a qualified electrician in Bristol for advice.
