Garden safety!

garden safety when using electric power tools

Garden safety , be safe using electrics!

Now that spring is noticeably on its way, it is time to get back in to the garden and clear away the post winter debris. Many people are replacing fence panels blown down in the storms and there is the usual leaf clearance and lawn trimming that takes place at this time of the year.

Whatever your plans are ,it is important that you use electrical tools and equipment safely in your garden. In particular I recommend the installation for the installation of an outdoor socket with RCD protection.

Why use a socket that is RCD protected?

  • Using an RCD protected socket on a lawn mower could save you from an electric shock if you mow your lawn on grass that is too wet.
  • Using an RCD protected socket whilst using DIY tools such as drills and hedge trimmers, it could protect you from electric shock is you was to go through a cable.

An RCD socket should be considered an important gardening essential.

Have you thought about outdoor sockets and garden lights?

Summer is always a busy time of year for electricians who are often found in gardens installing decking lights, garden lights , power to hot tubs and sockets ahead of summer parties. Why not get ahead of the rush and avoid disappointment by planning ahead this year?

You should consider your needs for outdoor sockets , it is far safer having them installed than trailing a cable from an indoor socket to outside.

Garden lighting can enhance the look of your garden and the exterior of your property.External lights are an attractive home feature for hosting BBQ's , parties & can even offer some level of security

General advice when using garden power tools

Power tools that have been sat in the shed all winter, how has life treated them, have they gotten damp, have mice been nibbling on the cabling.

Please think before using power tools and check them over for signs of damage before plugging them in to the mains electric.

Top tips....

  • DO check, flexes and plug tops before use.
  • DO replace damaged cables or plug tops
  • DO keep trailing flexes behind you when cutting and trimming etc
  • DO unplug the lawn mower before removing debris from the blades
  • DO wear rubber boots when using appliances in the garden
  • DO treat power tools with care
  • DO NOT extend flex cables with home made plug and socket assemblies
  • DO NOT leave garden power tools and appliances unattended when plugged in
