Do I need an electrical certificate ?

electrical certificates

Do I need an electrician to give me a certificate for electrical work ?

When you hire an electrician in Bristol, you may be issued a certificate, the type of certificate or report will depend on the extent of the electrical installation work carried out, inspected or tested.

What are the different types of certificates?

  • Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)
  • Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC)
  • Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)
  • Building Control Notification
  • Fire Detection Installation Certificate / Commissioning Certificate
  • Emergency Lighting Completion Certificate
  • Fire Detection System Servicing and Inspection Report
  • Emergency Lighting Periodic Inspection Report

Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) or a Minor Electrical Installation Works MEIWC

This certificate will indicate that electrical work has been carried out which is either:

  • New - Eg. A complete rewire
  • Addition - A new or new circuits have been installed
  • Alteration - A Modification to the installation

An EIC must be issued for all new installations including a Building Control Notification (Part P of the building regulations)

Only the electrician or electrical company carrying out the work can provide you with a certificate.Getting in another electrician to sign off someone else's work is a big no-no.

Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)

This is not a certificate , but a report on the condition of the electrical installation also known as a home buyers report or landlords report. An EICR can be used to assess risk and determine the safety of the installation.

Registered electricians have the relevant insurances to carry out EICRs

Building Control Notification

You should receive one of these where the installation has been notified to the council, if you have had electrical work carried out and the Local Council has not been notified they may class this as illegal electrical work which could lead to a fine or made to remove the installation.

You should always use a registered electrician that will issue the correct certification for the work they undertake

!! Take Care When Selecting an Electrician !!

Many electricians in Bristol are simply not interested in the small jobs. They want the choice jobs and will drop you when a bigger, supposedly more lucrative project comes in.

Others advertise as electricians having no qualifications. They thrive on the basis that you don't understand what they do and as a result charging for shoddy, and often dangerous electrical work.

I set up Burridge Electrical to provide you with a quality service and provide you with exactly what you need from a qualified electrician.
