Rewire or Upgrade? Here's How to Tell
If your home’s wiring is showing its age, you might be wondering: “Do I need a full rewire, or can I just upgrade parts of the system?” It’s a common question—and the right answer depends on your property’s age, condition, and future plans.
What Is a Full Rewire?
A full rewire means completely removing old wiring and replacing it with modern cabling, sockets, switches, and consumer units (fuse boards). This also includes new earthing and bonding for safety.
Best for: Homes built before the 1970s that haven’t been rewired, or properties with clear safety concerns.
What Counts as an Electrical Upgrade?
An upgrade can include any of the following:
- Installing a new consumer unit (fuse board)
- Adding sockets or lighting circuits
- Replacing visible switches and outlets
- Adding surge protection or smoke alarm wiring
Upgrades improve function and efficiency, but don’t address issues hidden in old walls and ceilings.
Top Signs You Might Need a Full Rewire
- Old rubber or fabric-covered wiring (pre-1970)
- Fuses instead of breakers on the fuse board
- Burn marks or warm sockets
- Flickering lights or regular tripping
- No earthing on sockets/light fittings
- Visible cracking in switch/socket back boxes
If you're unsure, we recommend a full EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report)—which we offer across Bristol and nearby areas.
When Is an Upgrade Enough?
If your existing wiring is modern and safe, but you just want more sockets or modern features (like USB outlets or kitchen lighting), a targeted upgrade can save money and reduce disruption.
Good candidates for upgrades include:
- Homes rewired within the last 20 years
- Extensions with newer wiring
- Properties preparing for EV charger installation
- Properties preparing for Solar Panels & Battery storage installation
