Is it time to upgrade or replace your smoke detectors?.
A correctly installed and working smoke detector is an asset to any home.In fact , these devices help to prevent thousands of fatalities every year, which is why it is important to have the alarms tested and inspected at regular intervals. However at some point it is going to be necessary to replace them.
When should you replace your smoke detectors?
It is best to replace your smoke detectors every five years. This means the whole device - not just the battery. Over time smoke detectors could malfunction or just general wear and tear can cause them not to work properly.
If you have recently bought a home you should get existing smoke detectors replaced as you don't know old they are, or if the property don't have any, you should get a registered Electrician to install some.
Things to consider when upgrading your smoke detectors
You should consider having at least having three detectors installed , one in the ground floor landing , one on the first floor landing and a carbon monoxide detector as near as possible to any gas appliance such as a boiler / back boiler. There are also heat detectors that can be installed in the kitchen areas and loft spaces.
A smoke detection system would be hard wired through out with a built in battery back up, in the event of power failure.
An ideal smoke detector installation would be:
- A smoke detector in your main living area
- A heat detector in the kitchen
- A carbon monoxide near your boiler
- A smoke detector ground floor landing and first floor landing
- A heat detector in loft spaces
- And if you have a garage attached to the property with electrical appliances in , we would recommend a smoke detector in there too.
