Why Being “Cheap” Can Be Costly
Scrolling through Facebook and see someone offering “cheap electrics”? 🚩 If they’re not registered with NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA, you’re risking more than you might think. Here’s what could happen if you hire an unregistered electrician.
1. No Legal Certification
Only registered electricians can issue valid electrical certificates like EICRs and Part P compliance documents. Without them:
- ⚠️ You could fail inspections when selling/renting
- ⚠️ You’ll likely need to pay again for proper testing
- ⚠️ Your insurance may not honour claims
2. Your Insurance Might Be Voided
Insurers may refuse to pay out if an electrical fire or fault is traced back to uncertified or illegal work. Registered electricians are required to carry up-to-date insurance. Facebook ‘traders’? Not so much.
3. You, the Homeowner or Landlord, Are Legally Responsible
If something goes wrong and your “electrician” wasn’t competent or registered, you could face fines or legal action. This is especially critical in rented properties and HMOs in Bristol where compliance is tightly monitored.
4. Your Family’s Safety Is at Risk
Electrical work that isn’t tested and signed off may seem fine… until it isn’t. Fires, electric shocks, and faulty appliances are just the start. Don’t cut corners where safety’s involved.
